Aeration is simply the removal of cores of soil and distributing them atop the ground surface. There are a number of ways to accomplish this but generally the easiest and most effective way is through a machine specifically designed to perform this task. Aeration provides valuable functions such as: 1. Providing a path for air and nutrient into the soil 2. Redistributing needed micro-organisms 3. Reducing soil compaction 4. Allowing for improved water absorption. While some remove the plugs of soil after aeration it is best if they are left in place and simply mulched through mowing back to the surface. Occasionally, where the organic nature of the soil composition is low, topdressing (distributing a thin layer) with compost after aeration is a great way to introduce additional organic matter where it is needed. In some areas of Colorado the high clay content dictates two aerations per year: usually one in early spring and one in the fall. For more information about aeration visit www.rdhlandscape.com .
